2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s so much to tell you about. I’ll try to economize my verbiage – a
difficult thing for this wordy performer – and give you the highlights.
The biggest news is that I’m recording another album! I’ve found a great
producer in Asheville and multi-instrumentalist Kara Barnard will join me. I’ll
go into the studio in late 2009 or early 2010. Why am I telling you now? My
fans have always been generous in helping me finance my recordings and I’m
hoping you can come through for me again. Just go to _www.jamieanderson.com_
(http://www.jamieanderson.com/) and click on “Help Jamie put out her new album.
” There’s a PayPal link there or if you’d rather, you can print out the
form and mail it to me. In addition to pre-sales, I’m also looking for folks who
can lend me $1,000 or more. I know, it’s a lot but this project will cost
about $10,000. As an independent songwriter that’s more than my checkbook will
ever have but it's peanuts to Sony – they could easily spend that much on one
song. So really, my project is a bargain. J
The next biggest news is that I’m finally on You Tube. There’s a video bio,
a cartoon of one of my songs and more. Details are below. Also below is a
link to a video clip that ran on the local news. Apparently older broads
teaching bellydance is Big News in Raleigh-Durham.
I had a great time on my August tour. I found out that the Square Café in
Pittsburgh has fries that are better than crack and I also was reminded how
much I adore Tracy Drach, who shared the bill. Indianapolis didn’t have as big
a turnout as I would’ve liked but I guess that’s what I get for scheduling a
gig so close to the Michigan festival. However, it’s all about quality and
not just quantity and I met some really nice folks there. I also performed in
Hart, MI, with Ruth Barrett, on the night before the festival. What a
peaceful, wonderful show that was. I love Ruth’s calm energy and she kicks booty on
that dulcimer.
So, are you sensing a theme? Sure I loved doing a little mini-Midwest tour
but it was kind of a plot to get me to Michigan. I love that festival. I
always strut away feeling like I should be wearing a suit with a cape. I taught
bellydance, songwriting, led a couple of bluegrass jams and worked for
Goldenrod. I discovered that I have fans who don’t even know my music, they just
show up at the Goldenrod booth every year and ask what new CDs I recommend. And
damn, there were some amazing albums. I went home with Sarah Bettens' new one
“Shine” as well as the new Janis Ian (I can’t wait to read her
autobiography), a double CD reissue from the Indigo Girls (hey, I’m a lesbian, it’s
national law that I own “Closer to Fine”), the new Catie Curtis, Erica Wheeler’s
wonderful "Good Summer Rain" (damn can she write) and a band new to me, The
Dollyrots, with one of my favorite all-time new songs “Because I’m Awesome.”
Now there’s one to blast in the car with the windows down.
I’m starting a new feature in my newsletter where I tell you the story
behind my songs. It's all my friend Mary's fault. I told her about writing one of
my songs and she said she found it fascinating. It only takes a little nudge
and I'm off and running. Anyway, you can see my first installment below.
For you hometown folks, I’m playing in Durham this Friday with my band. Come
at 7 ‘cause my violin player is doing a gig with a friend. Later in
September we’ll be appearing at the Carrboro Music Festival and BOTH gigs have NO
COVER.
If you live out of town, don’t cry ‘cause I’ll be in the DC area in late
September and early November – the latter with primo cover band Wicked Jezebel –
and later that month, in the Midwest. I hope to see y’all out at a gig!
10. The stories behind my songs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was a DJ at KXCI in Tucson for six years. I loved to play Louden
Wainwright’s “I Wish I Was a Lesbian.” It’s a funny song but I worried that I’d get
a call from an angry listener. The phone rang but it was always someone
laughing their butt off. I decided that if folks liked it so much that I would
learn it. I quickly realized, duh, I AM a lesbian, so I thought, well really, I
want to be a straight guy. Think of all the things I could do! So I made a
list – wear ugly clothes, fart loudly, make more money, feel safe … it was a
long list. I put it all together with a melody, then got worried so I played
it for all my straight guy friends. My friend Ted pretty much summed it up
when he looked at me thoughtfully and said, “Jamie, I don’t think you have
anything to worry about.”
I recorded “I Wanna Be a Straight Guy” on “Drive All Night” then
re-released it on “Three Bridges.” I got one piece of hate mail, a couple pages long,
from a woman who “couldn’t believe I wanted to be a heterosexual male.” (If
I did, whose business was it?) Most like it, even the conservative crowd at
a Nashville café who later booed me for an evil song about Bush. A college
audience in upstate New York didn’t laugh but I found out later that they’d
studied the song for a women’s studies class and had heard it a bunch of times.
Studied it? They were doing a unit on male privilege. Who knew that’s what
it was about? I just want to pee standing up.
I had fun recording the song, especially the burps at the end. Even after
chugging a soda I had trouble getting some good ones so my producer, Jim Henry,
rushed in with a can of pop and offered to give it a try. We had the
engineer roll the tape and just as the last chord faded we threw the soda down the
gullet and did our best effort. I let out a tiny "urp" but Jim ... well, he's
a straight guy. I laughed so hard I thought I'd need oxygen. When we mixed
it, Jim wanted to delete them. “I thought we were just goofing around” he
helpfully commented. Uh, Jim, it’s comedy.

11. Looking for Midwest venues for November
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you know of a great place for me to play in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio,
Indiana, Iowa or Wisconsin, please shoot me an email. It needs to have a
listening crowd, a PA and more than pass-the-hat-pay. I’ll consider a house
concert too (and I don’t need a PA for those). E me: Jamie at jamieanderson dot
com.
12. Looking for Florida venues for January
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Florida tour has a few holes and you can help fill them. If you know of a
place with a listening crowd and more than pass-the-hat pay, give me a
shout. Living rooms are great if they seat 20 or more. Jamie at jamieanderson dot
com.

13. Music and dance classes in Durham starting soon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you live in the triangle cities area and are interested in learning to
bellydance, to play the guitar or more about writing songs, check out my
classes. I'm offering bellydance and guitar at the Durham Arts Council,
_www.durhamarts.org_ (http://www.durhamarts.org) , songwriting and bellydance at Duke,
14. Mailing list business
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are on this list because you signed up at a concert or went online and
signed yourself up. If neither of those things happened then someone has
forwarded you this newsletter. I do not add anyone without their permission nor is
this list sold to anyone else. If you'd like to unsub, I'll cry but I won't
make you pay my therapist bill. You can do it yourself at
_www.jamieanderson.com/newsletter.html_ (http://www.jamieanderson.com/newsletter.html) . Likewise
if you'd like to change your address. Please don't forward virus warnings,
news items, jokes or petitions. With over 2,000 of you on this list it'd be
too much to keep up with the extra mail. However, I love getting mail from
fans and answer when I can: tsunamiinc at aol dot com.

15. Ending quotes

I’m thinking of the Republican convention. (I try not to do that, for the
same reason I don’t watch horror movies.)
