2. Welcome and general  blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy  Halloween, Hallowmas, Day of the Dead – whatever holiday you
celebrate. Dial it  back on the sugar though, I don’t want y’all too hyped up. Yeah,
like I’ve got  the right to tell you that. My birthday was the 29th and I
received  enough dark chocolate that for mere mortals would last a year but me?
Maybe a  week. Hey, it’s got antioxidants.
I had  the extreme pleasure of attending two great concerts last week, Janis
Ian and  Paula Poundstone; kick-ass folk music one night and great improv
comedy the  next. And actually, Ian can be pretty funny, especially when
expounding on her  ego. (Singer-songwriters have inflated egos? Who knew?) Poundstone
didn’t sing  but announced to a room full of Southerners that her and her
children were  atheists. The crowd got so quiet that I swear I could hear my hair
grow. Then  she followed it up with one liners about not bothering people on
Saturday  morning and giving out blank books. I think I bust a blood vessel
laughing so  much.
I’ve  been an Ian fan ever since a grade school friend’s mother brought home
 “Society’s Child.” (She was the cool mom on the block, also introducing me
to  The Doors and Carole King.) My nine year old mind couldn’t comprehend why
someone with such a pretty voice was banned from the radio. “At Seventeen”
came  out when I was seventeen. I dropped the needle down on that album so many
times  it’s a wonder I could still hear it through the scratches. I bought
all her  albums and learned as many of her songs as I could. My lesbian friends
and I  speculated about her sexuality but I didn’t know for sure until she
came out  with “Breaking Silence” just a few years ago.
I’d  forgotten what a great guitar player she is. She doesn’t just plow
through  standard chords but uses the whole fretboard, employing tasteful runs and
chord  voicings not found in the folk singer handbook. At the show she
started  “Society’s Child” with a cool bass run. The next day I cruised YouTube,
looking  at her old videos, including one from the Smothers Brothers show, back
when she  was a teen. I can’t imagine writing and performing a song about
interracial  dating at that age and in that time. At fifteen I was still learning
how to go  from D to G without stopping.
Read  her new book, folks. It’s really good. _www.janisian.com_
(http://www.janisian.com/)
While I  was perusing YouTube I found a wonderful clip of Phoebe Snow singing
“Let the  Good Times Roll.” I knew she was a good guitar player because of
that signature  riff from “Poetry Man” but I didn’t know how good until I saw
her rip into a  soulful solo on that video. It’s too bad she’s not performing
much these  days.
All  righty, enough blabbing about other people’s work, on to me, me, me. I’
m getting  ready to head out for a DC area gig with Wicked Jezabel and people,
it’s gonna  be fun. I know, I know, it’s past your bedtime but take a disco
nap, ‘k? Pretend  you’re 20 again and 10 pm is the new 7 pm. I’ll be
performing with my band,  Broad Street, something I don’t usually do except in my home
town. We’ve got a  little something special for you (hint: it involves a veil
and sequins) so you  don’t want to miss it. AND we’re followed by the best
party band on this side of  the planet. I’ll be shaking my booty with them
until the early hours, for sure.
Starting  in mid November I’ll be on a Midwest tour. I love being on the road
and I love  the Midwest, even in November. I’m doing concerts plus teaching a
bellydance  class in Nashville, IN. Details are above. I hope to see you at a
 show.
3. Please help me raise funding for my new  album
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, I don’t need 700 billion but if I change my name to Fannie Mae ... never
 mind.
My fans have been generous in helping me with albums in the past and I’m
hoping you’ll pull through for me again. Go to _www.jamieanderson.com_
(http://www.jamieanderson.com/) and click on the link that says “Help Jamie Put Out
Her New Album.” (I could say “Help Jamie put out” but really, I don’t need
help with that.) It’ll tell you how you can pay via PayPal or print out an
order form and mail in a check the old fashioned way. I’ll also have order forms
at my shows.
I’ve got a ton of new songs and a great studio picked out PLUS Kara Barnard
will be joining me on that multitude of instruments that she plays. I’m
soooooo excited about doing another recording.

4. Gift ideas

However, there’s a PayPal button there just in case you wanna be nice and help me
keep my cats in kibble.

5. Very funny Palin video
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Say  what you want about Palin, at least she’s good for comics. YouTube is
full of  songs about her. This one is my favorite because it’s well-written,
features a  great actor, and is so funny it made me snort coffee out my  nose:
6. The stories behind my  songs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month I had a great time telling you about the story behind my song “
Menstrual Tango.” This month I feel like writing about “Six Flags Over Jesus.”

Put away your CDs ‘cause this is one I haven’t slapped on a CD. I have,
however, put a rough solo version up at _www.jamieanderson.com/music.html_
(http://www.jamieanderson.com/music.html)  The reason I haven’t  spent money on a
nice recording is because I’m probably breaking a million copyright and
trademark laws. I put it on my website a few years ago because fans requested it.
Frankly, I’m disappointed that I haven’t yet heard from any attorneys.
A few years back, I had a gig in Denver. The next day, I drove south to
Colorado Springs for another show. As I entered the city limits, I saw a sign
proclaiming “Focus on the Family next exit.” (I knew they weren’t talking about
MY family.) Normally I wouldn’t get too excited about a sign like that but
this was a highway sign paid for with our tax dollars. In this country that
professes to be a land for all religions, I find it interesting that you’ll
never see a sign saying “Wiccan temple next exit.”
I whined about the sign at my concert that night. An audience member told me
what locals call the place and I thought, well, a theme park needs an
anthem. So I wrote one. It’s a fun sing along at shows although there’s a venue in
Virginia that may never book me again because of it. On the other hand, I
played it at an MCC (Metropolitan Community Church) benefit in South Carolina
and they loved it. Go figure.

7. Two great books about animals
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My  friend Mary Shafer has put together Almost Perfect, a heartwarming
collection of stories about disabled pets. As I read it I had to have a hankie
near by but damn, these stories were a great read, even the one about the rat.
The cover photo says it all – it features a very happy dog with a huge stick in
 her mouth, her rear legs supported by two wheels.
(http://www.wordforgebooks.com/almostperfect/index.html)
The  Winnipeg Humane Society has published Tell Me A Story About Pets 2, a
collection of pet stories and they’ve included the lyrics to my song “When
Cats  Take Over the World.” I loved this book, with tales about everything from a
wild  sparrow who visits her human friend every summer to stories about more
conventional pets. It’s a fundraiser. _www.tell-me-a-story.ca_
(http://www.tell-me-a-story.ca/)
Both of  these books would make great gifts for any animal lover.
8. Mailing list  business
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You are on this list because you signed up at a concert or went online and
signed yourself up. If neither of those things happened then someone has
forwarded you this newsletter. I do not add anyone without their permission nor is
this list sold to anyone else. If you'd like to unsub, I'll cry but I won't
make you pay my therapist bill. You can do it yourself at
_www.jamieanderson.com/newsletter.html_ (http://www.jamieanderson.com/newsletter.html) . Likewise
 if you'd like to change your address. Please don't forward virus warnings,
news items, jokes or petitions. With over 2,000 of you on this list it'd be
too much to keep up with the extra mail. However, I love getting mail from
fans and answer when I can: tsunamiinc at aol dot com.

8. Ending  quotes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We  believe that the best of America is not all in Washington, D.C. ... We
believe  that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit,
and in  these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being
here with  all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America
areas of this  great nation." --Sarah Palin, _speaking at a fundraiser_
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/17/palin-clarifies-what-part_n_135641.html)
in Greensboro, N.C., Oct. 16,  2008
"As  Putin rears his head and, uh, comes into the air space of the United
States of  America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over
the border."  --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives
her foreign  policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24,
2008
