2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m writing to you from the wintery landscape that is Ottawa. That’s
Canada, not Ohio. I’ll be home in balmy North Carolina in a couple of days and not
a frozen minute too soon.
OBAMA!!! I feel such hope for our country now.
It’s been a wild ride this month, starting with my band in DC and a rockin’
gig with Wicked Jezabel. I so love all those girls. A few days later I set
off by myself for some gigs in Illinois and Michigan. A special thanks to my
buddy Kara who gave me a place to crash for a few days when I needed rest the
most. This middle-aged body can’t make the long drives it used to back when I
started touring. (Insert your favorite “when dinosaurs roamed the earth”
metaphor here.) My apologies to anyone who came to the Chicago gig and missed
me. I hope you were able to make the Downer’s Grove gig. Damn but that was
fun. The Two Way Street Coffeehouse has been going weekly since 1970. Let’s hope
it keeps on for 38 more years.
I’m looking forward to a Florida tour in January. (How smart of me to go
there then, eh?) And an east coast one in March. (How not smart of me to go
there then. I love you folks, I just don’t love winter.)
Stay well everyone and enjoy whatever holiday(s) you celebrate. See you in
2009!
3. Please help me raise funds for my new album
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I need a lot less than 700 billion and it’s not even a bail out. I didn’t
manufacture cars no one wanted or give my CEOs huge bonuses or private jets. I
AM the CEO and I drive a 2002 Toyota. If you can help me with my newest
album, I’d be very grateful, maybe even name my next cat after you. It’s easy.
Go to _www.jamieanderson.com_ (http://www.jamieanderson.com/) and click on
the link on the home page that says “Help Jamie Put Out Her New Album.” (I
could say “Help Jamie put out” but really, I don’t need help with that.) It’
ll tell you how you can pay via PayPal or print out an order form and mail in
a check the old fashioned way. I’ll also have order forms at my shows.
I’ve got a ton of new songs and a great studio picked out PLUS Kara Barnard
will be joining me on that multitude of instruments that she plays. I’ll go
into the studio in late 2009 or early 2010. To say I’m excited about this
recording is a gross understatement. And for those of you who have heard it, yes,
I’m thinking of including “Come to Mama.” For those of you who haven't
heard it, well, come to a show.

And one more, if you can stand it, from a zydeco band. Oui on peut! Indeed:

6. The stories behind my songs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month I had a great time telling you about the story behind my song “
Six Flags Over Jesus.” This month I’m going to blab about “Too Busy Being Blue,
” known to some of you as the f**k you song. When I first wrote it I thought
I’d take out that word for performances but really, it doesn’t work as well
to say “forget you” or “screw you.”
I don’t know how my ex feels about the song but I don’t think she can argue
with the truth. I really was looking at the white spot on my left hand where
our ring used to be. The song was a way to get through my anger and what
better way than to use the f word? I know folk singers are supposed to sing
about social justice and daisies and stuff but I’m the one who wrote “Menstrual
Tango” so I’m not exactly Joan Baez. (And even she wrote “Diamonds and Rust.
”)
And I did lose the house and her love, along with the dog, my health
insurance and most of our friends. I have since realized that they may not have been
good friends anyway and really, with the amount of time I’m on tour having a
dog is not feasible. Besides, my ex may have dumped me unceremoniously but
she was fair in the settlement, regardless of what North Carolina law said she
owed me.
My ex had to know there’d be songs. I wrote “I Miss the Dog (More Than I
Miss You)” and “Her Problem Now” after the break-up before her. We songwriters
can’t afford therapy, we write songs and that works well thankyouverymuch.
“Too Busy Being Blue” was one of the first songs after the break-up. I’m
not that angry now. It’s been a few years and heck, I wish my ex well.
Is there a Jamie Anderson song you’d like to know more about? Write to me
and maybe I’ll cover it in a future newsletter.
7. Two great books about animals
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My friend Mary Shafer has put together Almost Perfect, a heartwarming
collection of stories about disabled pets. As I read it I had to have a hankie near
by but damn, these stories were a great read, even the one about the rat.
The cover photo says it all – it features a very happy dog with a huge stick in
her mouth, her rear legs supported by two wheels.

The Winnipeg Humane Society has published Tell Me A Story About Pets 2, a
collection of pet stories and they’ve included the lyrics to my song “When
Cats Take Over the World.” I loved this book, with tales about everything from a
wild sparrow who visits her human friend every summer to stories about more
conventional pets. It’s a fundraiser. _www.tell-me-a-story.ca_

Both of these books would make great gifts for any animal lover.

8. Mailing list business
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are on this list because you signed up at a concert or went online and
signed yourself up. If neither of those things happened then someone has
forwarded you this newsletter. I do not add anyone without their permission nor is
this list sold to anyone else. If you'd like to unsub, I'll cry but I won't
make you pay my therapist bill. You can do it yourself at
_www.jamieanderson.com/newsletter.html_ (http://www.jamieanderson.com/newsletter.html) . Likewise
if you'd like to change your address. Please don't forward virus warnings,
news items, jokes or petitions. With over 2,000 of you on this list it'd be
too much to keep up with the extra mail. However, I love getting mail from
fans and answer when I can: tsunamiinc at aol dot com.
9. Ending quote
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where
all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is
alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is
your answer…It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat
and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay,
straight, disabled and not disabled.” – Barak Obama
Gay!! He said “gay!” Hot damn.
Time to don my gay apparel and get outta here. Y’all have a warm December -
