The  Jamie Anderson Newsletter

My other gig. No, I don’t bellydance and sing at the same time. The sequins
scratch the back of the guitar. I regularly teach at the Durham Arts Council
in Durham, NC (www.durhamarts.org). I sometimes offer workshops out of town
too, most often at women’s music festivals and recently at Weed Patch Music
Company in Nashville, IN.

2. Welcome and general  blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Tuesday I asked one of my guitar  students how old he thought I was. He
answered with an absolute tone only a  10 year old could have. “Thirty!” No,
dude, I’m old enough to be your grandma.  And actually, I’d love to have
grandchildren but I skipped the part about having  kids. I turned 50 on Monday and
except for the new AARP mail, it feels perfectly  normal. Well, as normal as a
singer-songwriter-comic-bellydancer-teacher-writer can  feel.
Some of you have asked why I bill  myself as a singer-songwriter-parking lot
attendant. (It’s at the top of my  website and in a lot of my publicity.) I
thought it was funnier than  singer-songwriter-comic and really, you don’t want
to hand me keys to your  Toyota ‘cause  I’m legally blind in one eye. I have
done some really creative  parallel parking in my life. Still, some concert
emcees have introduced me as  someone who parks cars. Really parks cars. If I
have a whole audience of folks  like that, I’m in trouble.
It’s finally dipping below 80 here in  the balmy south. The oak in my front
yard has a red dusting with an underskirt  of brown. I won’t see all of the
fall here though ‘cause – whoo hoo!!! –  I’m headed to Arizona. Home, home,
home, where the tortillas  are fresh and so are the women. And it’s still 80. I’
ll be doing three gigs. For  those of you who are paying attention, you’ll
notice that there’s a change in my  Phoenix gig.  Unfortunately Slique can’t do
the concert so instead, voila! It’ll be  talented guitarist/singer-songwriter
Linda Bilque. She and I performed around  the Phoenix area  a lot in the 70’s
and 80’s so it’ll be great to share a bill with her. Expect  some special
guests at that show. In Tucson and Apache Junction it’ll just be little  ol’ me.
Can ya dig? Oops, sorry, I was channeling Sunshine Tofu Smith. Go back  to
the 60's, sweetheart.
A few of you are still sending me  jokes, political announcements and
petitions. Please don’t do that – there are  almost 3,000 of you on this list so
that could make for a lot of mail. J
If you recently purchased Three Bridges  – thanks, I adore you -- you might
want to check out the extensive liner  notes at _www.jamieanderson.com_
(http://www.jamieanderson.com/)  Just  click on the Three Bridges album cover. And
while you’re there, click on the  link for the video for “My Dad Loves to Sing.”
  It’s got actual photos of my dad plus  some embarrassing ones of me. Hey, it
’s all for art.
I hope to see you at my Arizona gigs in November.  If not, maybe sometime in
2008? C’mon! If you’re real nice, I’ll do a shimmy or  two.
3. Another  great review of Three Bridges!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"If you’re just starting out as a songwriter, this is a good one to get to
learn how it’s done." Whoa! I want a quote like that in every review.

4. Want me to perform in New England and New York?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you can see above, I’ve got a couple  of gigs scheduled for New England
and New York. I’m looking like crazy for more  gigs. Do you live in one of those
places and have a favorite venue where you’d  like to see me? Want to offer
your living room for a house concert? Give me a  shout! Tsunamiinc at aol.com
5. Doing  your holiday shopping early?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course I’m gonna recommend my CDs for holiday gifts:
_www.cdbaby.com/jamieanderson4_ (http://www.cdbaby.com/jamieanderson4) ,  _www.ladyslipper.org_
(http://www.ladyslipper.org/)  or _www.goldenrod.com_
(http://www.goldenrod.com/) are the best places to go. But I also want to recommend some of my
favorite shopping sites. CD Baby, Ladyslipper and Goldenrod are a good place to
start. I also love the stuff at _www.syracuseculturalworkers.com_
(http://www.syracuseculturalworkers.com/) . They have great products that celebrate peace and
social justice issues. Wonderful art (some very affordable, like notecards),
books and more. I’m also a big fan of _www.northernsun.com_
(http://www.northernsun.com/) . They carry some of the same items, with an emphasis on great
left leaning t-shirts. If you’re looking for wonderful music instructional
DVDs and CDs, I highly recommend _www.homespun.com_ (http://www.homespun.com/)
.

6. Wanna see a really hot woman guitarist? How ‘bout two?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was searching YouTube for a guitar  student and found gospel performer
Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She looks like a  conservative church lady with her print
dress and done-up hair but damn! Can she  burn it up on an electric guitar:
_http://youtube.com/watch?v=PnIJR3PWTT8_
(http://youtube.com/watch?v=PnIJR3PWTT8)
Then I found Ruthie Foster singing the  same song, only in an old school R&B
kind of way:
(http://youtube.com/watch?v=NMP8MuVx_Rg)
Whew doggie, some great music there. I  had the pleasure of hearing Ruthie at
a festival earlier this  year.
