2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are times when I look at my work and think, what the heck am I doing? I
’m 49 years old and I’m putting thousands of miles on my five year old
truck so I can stand in someone’s living room and tell bad jokes about my ex. Or I
’m hauling a heavy guitar case through endless airport hallways on the way
to a festival and thinking, “Does Bonnie Raitt carry all her own stuff?” And
in the end, you know what? It’s so worth it. I have a job where I get to
create art. I present it and folks clap. Not only that but they send me fan mail
and give me dark chocolate.
August was tres fun because I got to get out and perform. Whether it’s 5
people or 500, it’s Good. The concert in Hart, the night before the Michigan
Women’s Festival, was wild, people. Just wild. Y’all were so hepped up for the
festival! I love a lively audience and a show that starts with flashers,
well, girl howdy. It was fun sharing a bill with Nedra Johnson. We’ve talked
about doing that in other places. I hope it works out ‘cause I love her music.
Damn I’m perky.
My other jobs are fun too, whether I’m helping a nine year old learn her
first song on the guitar or teaching a room full of women to shake, rattle and
roll. On that last tour I taught bellydance at Weed Patch Music Company in
Nashville, Indiana. Most of them were retired ladies who’d giggle every time I
taught a move. We had to work hard not to whap the guitars right off the
walls. We had so much fun that we’re doing it again in September. So, if you’ve
ever wanted to take bellydance from me and you don’t live in Durham (or go to
a women’s festival), here’s your chance. And while I’m gumming about
workshops, I’ll also be teaching a songwriting workshop in Nashville.
I can offer private lessons while I’m in Nashville too – guitar,
songwriting or bellydance. E me for more details (_Jamie at jamieanderson.com_
Maxine Feldman, one of our women’s music pioneers, passed away recently.
Some of you may know her as the writer of “Amazon,” the song sung at the start
of the Michigan Women’s Music Festival. She worked at that festival for many
years and before that, toured the women’s music circuit in the early days.
She was one of the first performers that I know of who played all kinds of
venues, telling everyone she was an out proud dyke. Lost a fair amount of gigs
too but kept on. I didn’t know her well but we had the opportunity to hang out
a few times and I always loved her company. I’d love to hear from anyone who
knew her personally because one of the publications I write for has asked me
to write an obituary. If you want to know more, check out
Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the North Carolina Gay and
Lesbian Film Festival. Every film was fabulous and folks, that’s something coming
from me ‘cause many of the queer films I’ve seen in my life are, well, less
than stellar. But these! Yeow! One of my favorites was a short called “
Family Affair.” (I think that was the title. Cut me some slack, I’m over 40.) It
was a charming film shot in Iceland. I also really enjoyed “Four Minutes,”
an intense German film (aren’t they all?) with a great plot and wonderful
acting. I also saw “Mom’s Apple Pie,” a documentary about the early struggles
of lesbian mothers. It was great to see Boo Price, one of the founders of the
Michigan women’s festival, interviewed. The movie also featured the music of
Margie Adam and Alix Dobkin.
I’m really excited about my September gigs, especially the ones where I
share a bill. In Des Moines, Mary McAdams is opening for me. At the Big
Chicks/Homolatte gig in Chicago, my friend and poet Amy Hedrick is joining me. In
Pittsburgh my buddy Tracy Drach is sharing the bill and Indianapolis! Whoo
doggies! My buddy Tory K will be singing with me and also on the bill is popular
duo Mother Jane. Hope to see y’all out at a gig or workshop.
5. Do you live in IA or MN?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And do you wanna host a house concert? It's easy! You just need a list of
friends who love live music and a living room or other space that fits 20 or
more. I've worked with many first-time house concert organizers so no worries
there. If you can put on a show, contact me: _jamie at jamieanderson.com_
(mailto:jamie at jamieanderson.com) On Sunday, September 9, I need something in Iowa
or central/southern Minnesota. Even if you don't live in those areas and
think you may want to do a house concert someday, give me a shout.
