2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m wearing slippers. You know fall is definitely here when I stop running
around barefoot and put something on my feet.
I’m grieving over the loss of summer but I can still brag about my garden. I’
m still getting juicy tomatoes and my parsley is doing a whoo hoo come back
from the near dead. Time for a big ol’ bowl of tabouli. Yesterday I roasted 50
serrano peppers and may have to do more since the plant is still blooming.
Also loaded with flowers is this mystery vine that’s taking over the garden. I
planted a seedling that sprang up in my compost in July – so it’s probably
cantaloupe or watermelon – and now it’s bearing fruit. Either that, or it’s an
alien pod set to take over my backyard. If you don’t get a newsletter next
month, you’ll know what happened.
All righty, this isn’t a gardening newsletter, better get on to the real, uh,
meat of it, and talk about my music. I had some damn fine gigs in September
including the Ohio Lesbian Festival. I loved performing with vocalist Tory and
debuting some of my new songs. Later in the evening one of my dreams came
true. I performed with Barbara Higbie and Teresa Trull. I always thought their “
Sway of Her Hips” needed a bellydancer. J
The Carrboro Music Festival was a blast too. The room was far too small and
some of you had to be turned away. Sorry ‘bout that. You can catch me in a show
in Durham next month. Details above.
The really big news is that I’m doing another album. After touring for almost
20 years I figured it was time for a big damn celebration. The album will
include a re-release of older songs that haven’t been available for a while plus
a few new ones. Fabulous multi-instrumentalist Kara Barnard will join me for
the new songs. I only need $5,000 for this project. Yeah, “only.” But that’s
a third of what my last CD cost and if you look at the budget for major label
releases (thousands of dollars for EACH song) then you’ll know what a penny
pincher I am. Banks don’t give loans to independent musicians. My fans have
always helped me and I’m hoping you’ll pull through for me once again. Below is
an order form. Just print it out and mail it in with your check. Yeah, yeah, I
know I need to set up Paypal so you can do it on line but until then, use the
cavewoman method, okay?
I won an award for one of my songs! More below.
There are no performances scheduled for this month but next month I’ll be in
Durham and after that, in New Mexico and Arizona. Hope to see you at a show!
4. Song award for “Beautiful”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An international song contest, Unisong, has awarded my song “Beautiful” an
honorable mention. Pretty cool, especially considering that they get thousands
of entries from all over the world.

10. The ending quotes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Driving is today’s theme. Perfect for someone who’s gone through three
pickup trucks, driving thousands of miles while touring for 20 years. Thanks to the
Funny Times (www.funnytimes.com) for these quotes.
“Thanks to the interstate highway system, it is now possible to travel across
the country from coast to coast without seeing anything.” – Charles Kuralt
“Natives who beat drums to drive off evil spirits are objects of scorn to
smart Americans who blow horns to break up traffic jams.” – Mary Ellen Kelly
“The one thing that unites all human beings regardless of age, gender,
religion, economic status or ethnic background is that deep down inside we all
believe that we are above-average drivers.” – Dave Barry
“When buying a used car, punch the buttons on the radio. If all the stations
are rock ‘n’ roll, there’s a good chance the transmission is shot.” – Larry
Lujack
Peace, chocolate and good driving to y’all --
