2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m a little late with the newsletter because I’ve been on vacation and damn, a little time off has done this body good. I’ve watched a lot of movies (“Man of the Year” and “The Interpreter” were my favorites – don’t bother with “Death of a President” unless you want an expensive nap) and heard some live music.
I highly recommend the Guitar Woman shows (www.guitarwoman.com) that blues guitarist Sue Foley has organized. Last night’s concert featured Ellen McIlwaine, someone I had the pleasure of seeing at the National Women’s Music Festival in the early 80’s where she blew my hair back. Amazing slide guitarist and still going at it today, even after two hip replacements. Her new work includes tunes with a Middle Eastern slant and babe, that’s right up my alley. www.ellenmcilwaine.com Also featured at this show were Roxanne Potvin and Rachelle Van Zanten. www.roxannepotvin.com and www.rachellevanzanten.com The queen of the show was Sue Foley. Like the love child of Eric Clapton and Lucinda Williams, she wailed through several of her own songs as well as accompanying a few tunes from the other artists. These aren’t just half decent singer-songwriters who accompany themselves, these are kick-butt blues guitarists who could hold their own with better-known male guitarists like BB King. If you like Bonnie Raitt, you’ll love Foley. I’m the biggest Raitt fan on the planet and I’m here to tell you that Foley can play circles around her. Lord.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my new album. Your help means so much to me. I’ve got about 10 percent of the money. Like I’ve said before, banks don’t give loans to independent musicians. My fans have always been generous in helping me with other CDs so I hope you’ll come through for me again. This one will cost about $5,000, a fraction of my earlier albums. The studio and duplication facility need their money up front so I need the funding before I can start the project. There’s an order blank below. I know I need a Paypal link but if you could indulge me and do this the cavewoman way, I’d sure appreciate it.
While on vacation I’ve been re-reading “Dykes to Watch Out For.” www.dykestowatchoutfor.com Alison Bechdel is an excellent illustrator and writer. I’ve always loved her slice-of-life cartoons. Reading the old ones reminds me so much of my life and the different lesbian communities I’ve had the privilege to be a part of. Check out her work if you don’t know it! Even straight folks like it. J
In November I have one performance in my hometown of Durham. I’m excited to play with Kathleen Hannan and Sheila Warner. We’re going to do some solo work as well as play on each other’s songs. The energy should be faaaabulous. In early December I’m returning to my other home, the Southwest, for some shows in Arizona and New Mexico. It’s a quick trip so there aren’t a whole lot of dates but I hope that many of you can make a show.
