2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you’re all enjoying a beautiful warm spring. Being a desert gal, I
love hot weather. I’m fixin’ to (Southern speak for “I’m going to”) plant
cactus in my yard one day so I can reconnect with my Arizona roots. Quit laughing,
there are species of prickly pear that live in North Carolina. Anything else
would probably blow up with the humidity.
Well, what a month it’s been. First, my apologies to anyone expecting to see
me in Harrisburg or Frederick a couple of weeks ago. I got slammed with that
crud that’s going around. Since I sounded like Lauren Bacall after a carton of
cigarettes I elected to cancel the gigs. Don’t despair, I’ll be back in
Frederick on July 15. Details above.
It’s festival season y’all and I’m doing a bunch. I just finished the
Virginia Women’s Festival. Whoo wee I had fun. Not only was my set festive but I
really enjoyed the other artists. Saturday after my set was dance night – first,
the energetic alterna-folk of Ember Swift and band, then the world beat party
rhythms of Paprika, then the rock party extravaganza that is Wicked Jezebel.
Damn but those girls are fun … AND they let me be a rock star for one song. I
sang my parody of Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” After flipping
my hair and jumping up at the end for the big finish, I think I’ve finished
Rock Singer 101. (The song is about Bush, BTW, and I don’t need a band to perform
it. Come to a gig and I’ll play it for you.)
On to other festivals – I’ll be at the Festival for the Eno in Durham on
July 1 (www.enoriver.org). I’m doing two performances in the afternoon but I don’
t have exact times yet. Other performers include Dar Williams, Melissa
Ferrick, and many more, including two of my favorite dance troupes Belly Revelations
(bellydancers, natch) and The African American Dance Ensemble.
I’ll be at the National Women’s Music Festival in early July. As their
official Mistress of Frivolity I’ll be emceeing the main stage and whooping it up
at the auction. Oh the outfits I’m planning! If anyone finds a fetching prom
dress in a size 12, let me know. If it costs more than $10, forget it. I’m going
for cheap and ugly. I already have the opera length black gloves and tiara.
The Michigan Women’s Music Festival is in August. I’m teaching bellydance
there. The Ohio Lesbian Festival is in September. I’m doing a musical set as
well as emceeing. Whoo hoo!
Women in Harmony, my music camp for women, is coming up soon! It’s June 22 –
25. We still have room so register and plan to have a great time with us.
Unfortunately, this is our last year so if you’ve put off attending, this is the
year to go! Help us celebrate five years of pretty damn fine music making and
general merriment. More info is below.
3. This Way Out
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"This Way Out: the International Lesbian and Gay Radio Magazine" has a new
online home! You can find them on http://outinamerica.com starting in mid June.
On the air since April 1988, "This Way Out" is the multi-award-winning
internationally distributed weekly gay and lesbian public radio program currently
heard on more than 150 community radio stations around the world. The non-profit
radio program was faced with increased financial uncertainty when the
PlanetOut network announced that it was canceling its contract with "This Way Out"
after it had audiocast the program online for eleven years.

The new licensing agreement with Out in America, however, does not secure
"This Way Out's" financial future. Here’s how you can do your part -- go to
www.thiswayout.org to make a donation (U.S. tax-deductible) using the PayPal link.
 There are also a variety of "thank you" gifts being offered -- not the same
old "mug and t-shirt" fare, but special music, history and culture CDs
available exclusively from "This Way Out." Postal-mailed donations may be sent to
"This Way Out" at P.O. Box 38327, Los Angeles, CA 90038. In addition to direct
contributions, supporters can also bid on some terrific items at the StoneWall
Society-sponsored online auction to benefit the program -- look for the
"This Way Out" area at www.alternabid.com.

4. Do you live in West Virginia, Ohio or Michigan? Want to do a house concert?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
House concerts are a blast. It's like giving a great party with live music.
All you need is space that seats 20 or more plus a good mailing list of
friends. Even if you've never done it before, I can guide you through the process.
Give me a shout at office at jamieanderson.com if you might be interested.
Here’s what I’m looking for right now. Even if you can’t help me with these
dates and/or places, let me know if you might be interested in hosting a
concert and where you live.
August 4, West Virginia or Ohio
August 5, Ohio or Michigan
5. The last Women in Harmony Music Camp for Women
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Women in Harmony, my music camp for women, will be June 22 -- 25 at The
Mountain, a beautiful resort in the mountains southwest of Asheville, NC. This is
our last year so please help us celebrate five great years. There'll be fun
workshops (guitar, mandolin, harmony singing, songwriting, drumming, bass and
more), song circles, and an open mike. All levels are welcome - from shower
singers to intermediate players/singers. It’s like Girl Scout camp for adults only
you don’t have to sleep on the ground.

Register at  http://mountaincenters.org/WomeninHarmony_RegForm.pdf or call
828-526-5838

Our fab teachers are returning - Elaine Townsend, Phyllis Free, Mary Hocks
and moi. Our new teacher, Beth Johnson, is teaching a bass workshop. The rooms
are comfortable with a bathroom in every room, great meals (including
vegetarian options) and fabulous extras including trails for hiking and a pond for
swimming. The main room where most of our activities take place is comfortably
large with great views AND a grand piano. Last year we spent equal amounts of
time eating, singing and gazing at the rising moon over the deck where we all
stayed. It's just $397 - cash, check or credit - and that includes all
programming, housing and meals. That’s six workshops, four song circles, an open mike
and lots more.

Check out the website for photos of this gorgeous setting. It really is on
top of a mountain! If you want to see info and photos from our previous years,
see www.jamieanderson.com/harmony.htm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They took a year off but they’re back y’all!!  The National Women's Music
Festival is July 6-9, 2006, on the campus of Illinois State University, in
Normal, Illinois. It’s an incredible 4- day, jam-packed weekend of workshops,
concerts, drama, dancing, films, videos, and shopping, with access and child care
services and MUCH more -- all held indoors!
The incredible lineup features Vickie Shaw, Cheryl Wheeler, Margie Adam, Lisa
Koch, Erika Luckett, Deidre McCalla, Tret Fure, Karen Williams, Ellis, Nedra
Johnson, Natalia Zukerman, and Lisa Yvonne Ferraro...AND moi, just to mention
a few.
For tickets and registration information visit:
http://wiaonline.org/nwmf/forms/nwmfbrochure2006.pdf
This festival is the oldest women’s festival in the world. Yes, it’s even
older than Michigan. I’ve been attending since 1980 and I’ve never had a bad
time. They do it up right, folks, and it's INDOORS. No sleeping on the ground,
no porta Janes ... this is comfortable, people.
7. Openings for guitar students
older. office at jamieanderson.com
8. Michele Balan on Last Comic Standing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You may know this great comic from her gigs in Provincetown, women’s music
festivals or gay cruises. She’s a hard edged New Yorker who never fails to make
me laugh. She’s on the popular reality TV show Last Comic Standing, seen on
NBC Tuesday nights. They’re setting it up this year so you can vote for your
favorite comic. I highly recommend catching the show and voting for Michele. The
voting isn’t set up now but will be soon at www.nbc.com/Last_Comic_Standing
