2. Welcome and general blabbing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hot enough for ya? Does your hair ignite when you walk outside? Do you just
throw a steak (or tofu, ahem) out on the lawn and in a half hour pull back a
charred hunk? Geez oh pete, it’s like living in the desert again only I could
make coffee from the air. Good thing I’m taking off for the cool pines of
Michigan and the women’s festival. It will be cool, right? Ah, but there was that
year I taught bellydance where I proclaimed at the start of every workshop, “My
goal is to have no one die. “ They always laughed but I wasn’t kidding. I
made sure everyone had water and drank it often. We took lots of breaks and a
couple of times, made use of the near by water spigot. What a sight, to see 50
women lined up to get sprayed with water. We became human sprinkers when we
shimmied. And I met my goal. Not only did no one die but there wasn't a single
case of heat stroke. I'm not counting the Melissa Ferrick performance.
Okay, got off on a tangent there. What I really wanted to open with was
telling y’all about July. I started the month off with appearances at Durham’s
Festival for the Eno. The following weekend I journeyed to the National Women’s
Music Festival. I can’t believe it’s not illegal to have so much fun. The
entertainment was stellar, from the beats of God-dess and She (who knew this
folksinger would love rap?) to the pee-in-your-pants comedy of Lisa Koch. I had big
fun emceeing the stages, showing off my lovely costumes – powder blue prom
dress with tiara, anyone? On Saturday night I was presented with the Jane
Schliessman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Women’s Music. I am honored and
extremely pleased to be recognized. I’m in fine company too – the award has
also gone to Alix Dobkin, Cris Williamson, Goldenrod Music, Lisa Vogel, Ronnie
Gilbert and many others. Make your plans to attend next year’s festival. It’ll
be at the same university in Normal/Bloomington, IL, in early July. More at
www.wiaonline.org
The following weekend I mucked about in Maryland and Pennsylvania and after
that, Fayetteville, NC. I love doing those small shows where I get to meet
everyone.
I leave in a few days for the Michigan Women’s Music Festival. They didn’t
book me to play – poopy – but I will be teaching bellydance and working for
Goldenrod. Yeah, yeah, feel sorry for me as I teach a few hundred giggly women
to shimmy. I’ll be dancing in the Candlelight Concert on Sunday where I’ll try
very hard not to set myself on fire. Those two big torches and the candles
they use to light the stage make me nervous. I'd be an amazing firey whirlwind
but it'd be a really short performance. Maybe I should wear my glasses when I
dance.
On the way to the festival I’ll be catching a few gigs in the Midwest
including one at the Comfort Inn in Hart, Michigan, just outside the festival. It’s a
double bill with fab singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nedra
Johnson. Vocalist Tory Kragt will be joining us! If you want tickets, you better buy
them fast. The room is small and we’re almost sold out.
There’s info above about all my gigs. Hope to see you!
8. Michele Balan on Last Comic Standing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She’s in the final four!!! You may know her because we’ve shared gigs and
from her performances in Provincetown, women’s music festivals or gay cruises.
She’s a hard edged New Yorker who never fails to make me laugh and folks, she
really is one of the funniest on the show. Don’t vote for her because she’s
lesbian, vote for her because she’s great. The winners are determined by
audience (that’s us, people) votes. It’s on Tuesday nights on NBC. More at

10. The ending quotes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Well, I had a stupid income for what I do.” – Angelina Jolie, on why she
gives 1/3 of her earnings to charity
“There’s another force that wants to keep us from going to Washington, DC. It
’s the devil.” – John Jacob, Republican congressional candidate in Utah,
blaming Satan for setbacks in his campaign
That devil just ruins everything. Unless you’re Angelina Jolie.
Stay away from Satan, y’all, and have a great August.
